So after a few emails back and forth, I tried to set up a meeting with John and Dennix to go over what I have in mind for the film. Unfortunately, John was busy this weekend so I scheduled a meeting with Dennix.
We met up last night and went over the idea behind the film, the script, the storyboards, and also spoke some about the shoot dates and times. After we spoke about the film we had a chance to get to know each other a bit better. Here is a little about him:
- 26 years old
- Born in South Africa
- Moved to UK when he was 14
- Lives in Mansfield
- Likes going out
- Studied music at Nottingham University
- Has a comedy sitcom in the making
Additionally, I think its important for an actor to be able to identify with the role they are playing. Dennix told me when we met up that he has been in a rough environment and seemed to empathize and understand Paul. This will be very beneficial in making the film feel genuine.

Luckily, John, the last person to apply for Paul stated in their profile that they are comfortable doing accents and were up for trying new things. So I asked him if he would be interested in doing an Eastern European accent for Joseph and he agreed. John is also very experienced with work in short films, independent features, and theater.

Foreign Streets Script - Final Draft
Below is the latest copy of the script for "Foreign Streets". I made a few changes after considering some of the feedback I had received from Chris Cook and Makaya. Chris Cook is a director and Makaya is an actress who actively work in Nottingham. My initial script had some holes in it such as how Paul actually got the money and also how Paul ends up in the courtyard and can't make it into his house. I did have some explanations for these things but for the sake of time, I decided to change the story around a bit. Basically, Joseph now finds Paul next to a path after falling asleep on a bench while drinking vodka.
Also, the actual depth of the connection between the two characters needed to be developed. To do this, I have made more instances where Paul and Joseph see eachother before they actually meet. Also, I have tried to strengthen the narrative by really trying to get across that Paul is seriously considering his life. Also, to give more of a reason why Paul is pushed over the edge to leave his life in Nottingham, I've tried to show that Joseph reminds Paul of his brother.
"Foreign Streets"
Scene 1
EXT – GRAVEYARD 1 – MORNING
Joseph walks along a path through a graveyard. He reaches his parents’ tombstones, kneels, and begins speaking.
JOSEPH
Last year when they came and you told me to run, I ran.. I ran so far. I’m sorry I could not make it back until now but it’s been so hard.
Joseph reaches into his pocket and pulls out a gold necklace with a medallion. He holds it up and looks at it as it dangles from his fingers.
JOSEPH
All I found was Mother’s necklace. I will give it to my daughter after I make a life in England. Father you have taught me true strength and that is the only reason I am here today. I will not let you down…
Joseph kisses the necklace and places it back in his pocket.
JOSEPH
I love you.

Scene 2

Leave me alone kid, there’s gonna be people looking for me. It’s not safe for you.
JOSEPH
Quick then, lets go back together.
Paul looks at Joseph with uncertainty.

Joseph hands Paul a cup of tea.
PAUL
Thanks
JOSEPH
How about you Paul, what do you do here in Nottingham?
PAUL
Things that I’ve been doing for way too long. My parents were smack heads and left me and my little brother, Johnny, when we were young. We grew up with our grandmother down the road. So now I do what I can to pay rent and keep eatin’.
JOSEPH
Where is your brother now?
PAUL
He passed away last year… leukemia.
JOSEPH
What’s that?
PAUL
To tell you the truth, I don’t really know. All I know is that it took the last real thing I had in my life.

JOSEPH
Really? Leave and go where?
PAUL
The Bahamas… become a scuba diving instructor…

PAUL
Shit! I knew they’d find me! Turn off the light!
Joseph runs over and turns off the bedroom light.
Paul and Joseph hear glass shatter followed by banging around in Paul’s house.
PAUL
You see Joseph, when you grow up in a rough place, there are always people trying to take advantage of you… Sometimes you get forced into things that you don’t really want to be in… things where there are no ways out…
Joseph lights a candle with a match.
JOSEPH
That is what I thought too Paul… however, I’ve realized that you must create life, do not let it create you, or else it will destroy you.
Camera dips to black.
Scene 13

“Joseph, This is the reason why those guys were after me last night. I could never thank you enough for your kind words and for saving me. I’m sorry that you got involved. No one else would have done that for me and I’m never going to let it happen again. I’m going straight to the Bahamas with the other half of the money. I hope this holds you over while you make a name for yourself. I’ll send you a postcard…
Paul”

One of the major problems in the UK at the moment is knife crime. According to an article by the Independent (See below), there are 14,000 knife crimes a year in Britain. I heard on "Police Interceptors" on channel Five the other day that said there is a knife crime committed every 24 minutes in Britain. I want to make a film that represents the zeitgeist of my generation and these facts inspired me to include this theme. This theme will be conveyed through Paul, the "bad boy" main character.

Another major issue in the UK at the moment is the credit crunch and the influx of foreign workers. The results of a questionaire conducted by the BBC showed that out of 135 Polish participants, only 8 regretted coming to Britain (See below). In my film, I want to show the contrast of these two cultures. This theme will be expressed through the other main character, Joseph.

Foreign Streets Inspiration
"Kids" Trailer
This film inspired me in the way that Lenny Clark brought out the realistic side of New York youth. I like the fact that it somewhat lacks plot because it is much more like a "day in the life" story and feels very personal. I also liked the fact that much of it seems improvised. I think the actors play the roles perfectly and that there was a strong message sent. I would like to emulate the gritty nature of this film. What I would like to do different, however, is to make it more minimal and show two opposite characters who's lives collide.

Paul goes to sit up but groans in pain.
JOSEPH
No, no, please stay laying down. You need to get to a hospital… I didn’t have a phone to call an ambulance and I couldn’t take you because the people who were after you stayed and broke into next door… I thought they were just looking for you but they only left about an hour ago…

Joseph, my name’s Joseph… Pleased to meet you, however unfortunate under these circumstances…
PAUL
Yeah… Why are you here Joseph?
JOSEPH
Well, you see my parents died when I was 17. My father left me the land and a small inheritance. With that I bought a seat on a small ship.
I arrived two days ago and took a bus to Nottingham to find work…
PAUL
How are you finding it?
JOSEPH
Quite hard… it’s not what I expected… How bout you? What do you think of Nottingham?
PAUL
See me, I’ve only lived down the street and next door. I used to love it, there was a big energy to it… Now, I just want to leave.
JOSEPH
Leave and go where?
PAUL
The Bahamas… become a scuba diving instructor…
JOSEPH
Oh? why that?
PAUL
My little brother, it was his dream…
JOSEPH
Where is he now?
PAUL
Dead for the same reason you see me here tonight…
JOSEPH
What reason is that?
Paul sighs loudly.
PAUL
You see Joseph, when you grow up in a rough place, there are always people trying to take advantage of you… Sometimes you get forced into things that you don’t really want to be in… things where there are no ways out… things that end up hurting other people… innocent people.
JOSEPH
That is what I thought too Paul… however, I’ve realized that you must create life, do not let it create you, or else it will destroy you.

No one else would have done that for me and I’m never going to let it happen again. I’m going straight to the Bahamas with the other half of the money. I hope this holds you over while you make a name for yourself. I’ll send you a postcard…
Paul”

Character Study
Here is a character study which I did for my short film. This helps to conceptualise what each character is about and gives a backdrop to their meaning and purpose in the story:
Character Study:
Joseph:
• Lost his Mother and Father
• Smaller built
• Innocent
• Timid yet eager
• From a small town
• Wears tatty, non-lable clothing
• Loves music
Paul:
• Lost his little brother
• Larger built
• Forced into a gang in Nottingham when he was young and became the leader
• Distant from others due to second guessing his life
• Has a strong conscience
• Dresses in all black
• Loves music
• Wants to honor his brother and become a scuba diving instructor
Johnnie:
• Pauls dead little brother
• Innocent
• Cheerful
• Smaller frame
• Wears collared shirts and shoes
• Wanted to go scuba diving in the Bahamas
Margaret:
• Landlord
• Older woman who lives on her own
• Frail
• Kind
• Honest

Fictional Short Film
Recently we have been given the task to create a 6 minute fictional film based on the relationship between two people. We have to turn in a 1 minute pilot of this film at the end of the term and the film in its entirety next term. Here is the outline for the idea that I came up with (the names are temporary):
FOREIGN STREETS
(First Outline)
Synopsis:
“Foreign Streets” is a story about Joseph a young person from another country (preferably outside the UK) who has lost his family and moves into a run down house in a rough area in England. While looking for work, he experiences a hostile environment and sees a side of England he had never heard of. Meanwhile, Paul, the local “big man” on the block has been noticing the young man and has been second-guessing his life in trouble due to recent losses of his own. One night Joseph hears some noises in the alley behind his house and finds Paul stabbed and takes him into his house, saving him from a rival gang. After this they become friends and the young immigrant convinces the local hoodlum to leave Nottingham and follow his dream of leaving his gang and becoming a scuba diving instructor in the Bahamas.
Who:
Joseph (18)
Paul (25)
Johnnie (16)
Margaret (60)
Where: Nottingham
How:
- Quick momentum (Eight 30s scenes with quick shots and one 1min45s scene)
- Use of flashbacks
- Themeatic and contrastic music
- Building a relationship through parallels between two opposite characters
Why:
I want to make this film to compare and contrast two different cultures. At the same time, I want to show that people from different cultures are often the same. This belief stems from living abroad and being an international student in Nottingham.

Finished Documentary
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to upload the video and need to get the .avi file from my friends hard drive. Until then, go to the link below and look at the "Last Few Yards" post at the top.

I am incredibly pleased with the result. However, I have received feedback that the music is too constant and loud. There needed to be a greater variety and also should have dipped in and out rather than played through. Also, one of the lecturers mentioned about the pace of the speaking. Nathan is constantly speaking and we didn't leave enough time between the segments of speech so that some of the information could be absorbed and also to be able to appreciate some of the visuals more. Other than these aspects, I believe the film is a massive success.
